How to Cleanse and Charge Your Crystals
Share
If you've just brought home a new crystal — or you've had one for a while and it's feeling a little heavy — it's time to cleanse and charge it. This is one of the most foundational practices in crystal work, and honestly, it's one of my favorites. There's something so grounding about taking a few intentional minutes to reset your stones.
Here's everything you need to know to get started.
Why Cleanse Your Crystals?
Crystals are energetically absorbent. They pick up on the energy around them — from the people who handled them before you, from your own emotional states, from the environment in your home. Cleansing clears that accumulated energy so your crystal can work at its fullest potential (and so can you).
Think of it like washing a new piece of clothing before you wear it. It's just good practice.
How to Cleanse Your Crystals
There are several beautiful ways to cleanse crystals — choose the one that feels most natural to you, or mix and match depending on the stone.
Smoke Cleansing
Pass your crystal through the smoke of sacred herbs or incense. This is one of the oldest and most widely used cleansing methods. You can use palo santo, cedar, or an herbal incense blend. Hold your crystal in the smoke for 30–60 seconds while setting a clear intention to release any stagnant energy. Browse our Incense & Smoke collection for tools to support this practice.
Moonlight
Place your crystals on a windowsill or outside under the light of the full moon overnight. This is a gentle, effective method that works beautifully for almost every stone. The full moon is especially powerful, but any moonlight will do.
Sound
Sound vibration is a wonderful way to cleanse multiple crystals at once. A singing bowl, a bell, or even clapping your hands near your stones can shift and clear their energy.
Earth
Bury your crystal in the earth (or in a bowl of dry soil) for 24 hours. This is especially grounding for stones that have absorbed a lot of heavy energy. Just make sure your crystal is safe to get dirty — most are, but check first if you're unsure.
Selenite
Selenite is one of the few crystals that doesn't need cleansing itself — and it can cleanse other stones simply by proximity. Place your crystals on or next to a selenite slab or wand overnight.
How to Charge Your Crystals
Charging is about amplifying your crystal's energy and aligning it with your intention. After cleansing, your crystal is a blank slate — charging fills it back up with purpose.
Set an Intention
Hold your crystal in both hands, close your eyes, and speak (or think) your intention clearly. What do you want this crystal to support you with? Protection? Clarity? Love? The more specific, the better.
Sunlight
A few hours in morning sunlight can powerfully charge many crystals. Note: some stones (like amethyst, rose quartz, and fluorite) can fade in prolonged direct sunlight, so keep it to an hour or two.
Moonlight
Moonlight both cleanses and charges — it's a two-for-one. The full moon is the most potent time, but new moon energy is wonderful for setting fresh intentions.
Crystal Clusters
Placing smaller stones on top of a large quartz cluster or amethyst geode will charge them with amplified energy. This is a beautiful way to keep your everyday carry crystals energized.
How Often Should You Cleanse?
There's no hard rule here — trust your intuition. A good general guideline is to cleanse new crystals when you first bring them home, after any emotionally intense experience, and once a month (the full moon is a natural reminder). If a crystal feels heavy or dull, that's your cue.
